Websites for improving home/school relationships:

As someone at the high school level, I prefer to use Apps rather than websites to engage students and their families with what is going on at school. One important tool for reaching out to parents is Google Voice

https://voice.google.com/u/0/about

A colleague introduced me to Google Voice as a way to communicate with parents about how their student is doing in class. I noticed that sometimes parents and guardians did not always respond to emails, but have had many positive experiences with the texting feature of Google Voice. I have had "conversations" with parents and guardians that I might not have had otherwise. This allows them to be more aware of missing assignments, upcoming tests/projects, and to share positive things their student is doing in school.

There are many benefits for teachers. They still get to keep their personal phone number private, and they can turn off Google Voice once the school day ends, allowing them to recharge both their phones and themselves. To create a Google Voice phone number, teachers need only a Google account. Texting, instead of calling, saves time and is more convenient for teachers and parents.

Another wonderful resource is The Education Hub. This site helps explain the importance of home-school partnerships. The site delves into the many importance positive impacts for both students and their families that can be fostered by having a strong home-school partnership.

Videos for a PD workshop or Ice Breaker for workshop:

As an administrator, learning by example is an important habit to embrace. I look to those who have come before me who I believe "got it right." In other words, they created an incredible school climate and culture where teachers and students felt valued, supported, and respected. I often show clips of Dr. Rita Pierson not only as inspiration, but as a guide that reminds us that the power of example is FAR MORE important than being an example of power. She also reminds us of the importance in building relationships, which is at the heart of every successful classroom, school, and community.

Another educational rockstar who I greatly admire is Dr. Linda Cliatt-Wayman. I would also use her messages to share with teachers at PD workshops. As someone who is very passionate about SEL, trauma, and resilience, her words speak to me. She reminds us that love is at the core of what we do as educators.

Websites for Best Practices ELA Teachers:

While it is important for principal's to have an understanding of what is taking place across the curriculum, the ELA department must cover many areas that are significant on standardized tests. They must cover reading, grammar, mechanics, writing, etc.

Learning for Justice is a favorite for connecting material from class to student's lives. Whatever topic is being taught, real world connections allow opportunities for students to make deeper connections to their learning. Whether reading a book about the Holocaust or the Salem Witch Trials, Learning for Justice provides the historical framework to help students understand what was going on in the world when the authors were writing their stories.

Owl Purdue is a wonderful resource that houses writing resources and instructional material, which are provided free service by the Writing Lab at Purdue University. Students, teachers, the community, etc. will find information to assist with many writing projects.

Websites that offer best practices for students who are struggle in different areas (Special Education, IEPs, 504s, etc.):

Better Lessons - Choice Boards helps teachers develop choice boards for students for many different areas of the curriculum. Choice boards allow students to choose which activity they would like to do in order to show they understand the concepts. If a student has dyslexia and struggles with writing, a choice board allows them another way to complete the assignment without becoming frustrated. Choice boards allow ALL students to find success in the classroom.

Pathways 2 Success is a great site to help teachers understand how to make accommodations for students with IPEs and 504s. This is a wonderful learning tool for regular division teachers who may serve students who use accommodations.
